An Ounce of Prevention
Christopher Blair, D.O., M.B.A.
We all have reasons (excuses?) why we make poor choices regarding our own
health.  We put off going to the doctor for an annual physical we know that we need, we
continue to smoke knowing full well that it’s bad for us, or we eat yet another fast food
lunch, convincing ourselves it's all we have time for.  But the time is now to reconsider
continuing to put off the inevitable.

It’s remarkably easier to come up with an excuse for putting off that which we know
we need to do.  Fitting in time at the gym to shed those extra pounds, for example, can
be excused away because of the heat, or the fact that it’s raining, or not wanting to get
sweat on the new leather seats.  Smoking?  Well, you quit once, so surely you can kick
the habit whenever you want, right?  But right now, work is just too stressful.  And, of
course, something always needs to be done around the house when you try to fit in that
annual physical.

The harsh reality is that these problems are not going to improve on their own.
Weight gain gone unchecked can lead to a myriad of problems, not the least of which
include the debilitating pain of arthritis, unsightly stretch marks, and even adult-onset
diabetes.  Smoking increases the risk of wrinkles, worsening respiratory problems that
can become chronic, and an increased risk for developing many kinds of cancer (and
not just lung cancer).  Out-of-shape muscles and joints can set you up for unwanted
sprains, strains, and even broken bones that might otherwise be avoided.

No one wants to be sick, or ill, or injured.  And once there, you’d do almost anything to
turn back the clock.  Well, now is that opportunity.  Take the steps that you know you
should, to get yourself back on the healthy track.  Just say "NO" to fast food.  Make
regular, moderate exercise as much a part of your routine as meals are.  Many new
immunizations are available for diseases, such as hepatitis, that may not have been
available when you were in school.  Get yourself protected.
